FAQ Page: You got questions? We have answers...

Do you have a question that is not answered here? Use our Feedback Form to let us know.

General Questions

Q) I can't find a song I want in your library, how can I request it?

To request tracks just use our feedback page, which is linked from the bottom of every page. For the best results be sure to state the title as well as the artist who performed the version you are interested in. We can't promise it will be up right away but our track provider has an extensive library and if they don't already have the track we can request it be made. Preference will obviously be given to frequently requested tracks.

Q) I just want to listen to recordings, do I need to be a member?

You don’t have to sing or even be a member to enjoy the site, however membership gives you the ability to create a profile, track other members as well as download and use our Karaoke Studio Application.

To just find and listen to recordings, you can go to the Charts page to see the top recordings on the site. You can also use the Search page to look for all recordings on the site based on whatever criteria interests you. When you find a recording you want to hear just click the play button and the recording should load into our site player

Membership Questions

Q) What does paid membership get me?

Paid membership gives you access to our entire library which includes the gold tracks as well as free tracks. Paid members are also automatically entered in prize draws, eligible for online contests and given cumulative membership rewards. For more on these and other promotions you can check-out the promotions tab of the News page.

Q) What if I don’t want to sign up for a monthly membership?

You can still create a free membership, use the Karaoke Studio application and have access to the free tracks. In the coming months we also plan on offering individual and packages of tracks for purchase which would give free members access to gold tracks.

Q) What happens to my recordings if I cancel my membership?

If you cancel your membership your recordings along with their plays and ratings will stay active on the site unless you delete them. Any local recordings you have of gold tracks will stay but be inaccessible while you maintain a free membership.

Karaoke Studio Questions

Q) Is the application free?

The Karaoke Studio application is 100% free to all members, you do have to have a user name and password to start the application though. What tracks you can access are affected by your membership with gold tracks only being available to paid members. Additionally we plan on offering free members the ability to purchase access to specific tracks both as single purchases as well as blocks of purchases.

Q) Why an application and not record through the web?

At MeAndMic.com we made the decision to record using an application because most of the problems we saw with existing karaoke sites had to do with the limitations of a browser based approach. Without getting technical a few reasons why we believe an application is a better choice are:

  • Since you aren't continually streaming your recording you aren't at the mercy of your connection. This means less hicups in the recording and less bandwidth used.
  • Since you are first recording locally, you can record as many times as you want, compare your recordings and upload only the best.
  • You aren't required to use any specific browser.
  • The approach opens the door to creating other versions for different platforms. Mac users you're next on our list...
  • By creating an application we have much more flexibility in how we can improve your karaoke experience. Wait til you see what we have in store for version 2.

Q) What about updates?

Like any software we will make updates to the application, some for bugs and errors and others to improve its use. We will notify users of new application builds in our newsletter releases as well as on the news page.

Q) I’m having difficulty downloading the application, what can I do?

The standard download time we’ve experienced is 3-8 minutes with a high-speed ISP. This can vary depending on bandwidth and geographic location, for example a dial-up connection would take considerably longer. If your speed is quite slow it may cause the download to time out, in this case you can try downloading again but you may want to check if you have other applications tying up bandwidth like peer-to-peer applications, streaming media etc, or in the case of WI-FI that there aren't several clients connected at once. If you still have problems, try a different time as some ISP's have peak usage times.

Q) My installation didn’t work what can I do?

This could be because the application file corrupted when downloading; you may want to try uninstalling the application from your control panel, download the file again and reinstall. You can always use our Feedback page to contact one of our admin staff for assistance.

Q) Can I give my recordings to other users?

For license reasons you do not have direct access to your recordings for distribution. If you want other people to hear you the best way is to upload the recording to the site and then message other users, or email non-members to check out your version.

Q) I use a Mac what about me?

As we mentioned one of the reasons we went with an application approach is so we can make multiple platform versions. We hope to have our Mac version completed with in the next few months.

Profile Questions

Q) I'm totally new to social networking how can I find out more information on these topics?

MeAndMic.com has two main ways that you can learn more about the features on the site. First we've created a comprehensive User Guide that covers the main features of the site and includes a guide for new users. The link to the guide can be found at the bottom of any page. Secondly most pages have a help button in the top-right corner of the page, you can click this button to open a help window.

Q) What is my user profile?

Your user profile is the collection of data that describes you and your interests. Items like your real name, street address, email address and phone numbers are NOT publically visible to other users. Data like your alias, general address (city, country) are public as well as the supplementary data like you favorite genres, who you listen to and your bio.

Q) How do I alter my profile data?

Once you are logged in you should notice a button for your user settings on just about every page in the top-right corner or in the title bar on profile pages. All of your profile data can be accessed and changed from the pages under the My Account section of the user settings.

Q) What is my profile page?

Your profile page is like a mini-website that you can create. It can be one or more pages and you add content to the pages using modules. For example your profile data can be shown using an About Module, your recordings by a Music List Module and so on.

Q) What is the difference between public and private items?

Your profile pages as well as content modules can be set to be public or private. When set to private only you would be able to view the module or page in question. For example you might do this if you were in the process adding data to a module or wanted a page just to show people in person.

Q) How do I add images to my profile?

You can upload images to a personal folder as well as organize existing images from the Image Manager found on your User Settings page. Once images have been uploaded you can create albums of images to add to a slide-show module, add them to a general content module or set them as the icon for your profile or for your recordings.

Q) What are fan users?

Fans are like "Friends" on other sites. If you want to become a fan of another user you can click the Become Fan button typically found by their name in the search window, on their page in an About module or any other place that you find user listings. You would send them a fan request and if they accept it you are know fans of each other.

Q) How do I communicate with other users

The three main ways to communicate with other users: you can leave comments for them on their page from a comment module, submit comments for their songs or if they are a fan you can send messages to them or groups of fans.

Technical Questions

Q) Can I use headphones?

Yes, since we record only the vocal track and layer it on the original karaoke track you can use headphones. In fact you will often get better results if you use headphones.

Q) What about speakers?

You can use speakers generally without any problem. We have noticed that if you both have your speakers very loud and directed towards your microphone you may get a bit of echo on the final recording. If you are having a karaoke party and need to have your speakers loud try, singing behind the speakers just like you would in a club or bar.

Q) My microphone is not working what can I do?

For Windows operating systems you would open your Control Panel and select Sound. First check to see that a microphone is installed. If not refer to your manufactuer instructions on how to install your hardware.

If the microphone is installed, check that it is plugged in and registering your voice. If you check it at a normal vocal level the green bar to the right should read anywhere from 50-75% of the level.

Check to see that the level bar on the right registers your voice levels.

Q) I’m singing too loud or too low what can I do?

You have two options, first you can boost your hardware itself. Go to the sound options again (as above), select your microphone and click Properties. You should see a dialog like the one shown, click on the levels tab and adjust the level. If you are too quiet consider using the boost which is avaliable for most microphone types.

Your other option is to adjust the recording after the fact in the Karaoke Studio application. In the application after recording a song click the pencil icon by the recording. You can adjust the background or the recording up or down, you can then preview and if you are satisfied apply the changes. See the application help file or movie for more.

For some microphones you may want to use the boost.
